Be Kind

It's extremely likely that if you are teaching, then one or more of your students has been affected by the coronavirus in some way. They may have contracted the virus, or a family member may have been taken ill. In the worst case, there may have been a bereavement.


If a student needs time off, give it to them without hesitation. I use the words told me when my father died. My boss at the time, Professor Alex Bradshaw, simply said


"Take as much time off as you need, Andy".

At that time we were swamped with upcoming experiments, and my absence would have been a serious issue. But he still said it. I've never forgotten that, and I use the same phrase. I add my own phrase

Family is far more important than any Physics course. Go home.

That's all it takes to be kind.
